What does linearizing (Fast Web View) do?
An ordinary PDF keeps its table of contents at the very end, so a reader must download the whole file before it can show anything. A linearized PDF is written in page order with a hint table up front: a browser or reader that fetches it over the web shows the first page at once and loads the rest as you scroll. The pages, the text, the images are all unchanged.
When is it worth it?
For a PDF that people open from a link - a report on your website, a manual, a large brochure. Opening a file from your own disk is instant either way, so there it changes nothing. Most tools that rewrite a PDF (merging, compressing, editing) undo the linearization, so run this last.
Does it make the file smaller?
No, it is about the order of the bytes, not their number; the file stays about the same size. Use Compress for size, and linearize afterwards.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. The file is rewritten in your browser, on your device, and nothing leaves it.
