How to redact a PDF: remove names and numbers for good

A black box drawn over a name doesn't hide it: the text is still in the file, and anyone can select and copy it. Redact PDF deletes what you mark - the letters are cut out of the page, pictures painted over, notes removed - and only then draws the bar. Find what to remove by searching, with the personal-data sweeps or by dragging a box. It all happens in your browser; the document is never uploaded.

概要

Drop your PDF on the page, or press Add files.
Mark what must go: drag a box over it, search for it, or press E-mail, Phone, Bank account…
Check every mark on the page.
Press Redact: the redacted copy is saved to your device straight away.

Add the documents

Drop the PDFs anywhere on the page, or press Add files. The selected document opens big in the middle; the thumbnails beside it and the pager above take you through its pages. Each file keeps its own marks.

Find personal data

The buttons under Find personal data sweep the whole document for one kind of data: E-mail, Phone, Bank account, Tax number, ID number, Date. Nothing is marked yet: every hit shows on the page as a dashed frame for you to check.

Mark all takes every hit, Dismiss none; a click on one hit on the page marks only that one.

A sweep is a help, not a guarantee: it finds what looks like an e-mail address or an account number. Read the page yourself before you save - a number written in an unusual way can slip through.

Search for a word or a name

Find text finds a name, a number or any word everywhere in the document, the way the sweeps do - hits to check, Mark all to take them. Whole words only finds "Ann" without the "Ann" in "Annual". The search reads the document's own text, invisible OCR text included, so a scanned and recognised page is covered too.

The letter with the name, the e-mail, the phone number, the account number and the date of birth marked as black bars — The name found by search, the rest by the sweeps. The lone "Jordan" in the last line wasn't part of the search - a second search for it would take it too.

Mark by hand

Drag across anything on the page - a line of text, a signature, a photo - to mark it. A mark can be moved and resized, and its × removes it.
Black out this whole page marks the page from edge to edge.
Remove all marks from this file starts again.

What is left behind

Mark left behind decides what the reader sees where the content was: a Bar in the colour you choose (black, or a shade that suits the document), or Nothing - the place is simply empty. Either way the content itself is deleted.

Redact and save

Press Redact. The line under the button counts the marked areas. The redacted copy is saved to your device at once, and the rail lists what was removed: characters of text, pictures painted over, notes taken out.

Keep your original: what you redact is deleted from the copy and cannot be brought back from it.

Limits

Without an account, and with a free one, you can redact two files in a run, each up to 15 MB. With Pro there is no limit, and you can save the sweeps you always run as a preset - never what you marked, which belongs to one document.
