How to repair a damaged PDF that won't open: a step-by-step guide

A PDF that says "the file is damaged" is usually still mostly there: a download that stopped early, a copy cut short, an exporter that wrote its table of objects wrong. Repair PDF checks every file as you add it, rebuilds what it can and tells you in words what was wrong. A healthy file is left alone. It all happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Ukratko

  1. Drop the damaged PDFs on the page, or press Add files.
  2. Each file is checked and repaired as it arrives.
  3. Look through the pages: they are the repaired file.
  4. Press Save repaired PDF: the file is saved to your device straight away.

Add the files

Drop the PDFs anywhere on the page, or press Add files. The tool has no settings: each file is checked the moment it arrives, and what can be fixed is fixed right away. The list says what happened to each, and the pages in the middle are the repaired file - so check that they are all there.

What the list says

  • Repaired - small structural errors, rewritten clean.
  • Rebuilt - badly damaged, rebuilt object by object from what is left.
  • No damage found - nothing to fix; the file is skipped.
  • Damaged content - the structure is sound, but some data (a picture, a block of text) can't be read.
  • Password-protected - remove the password with Unlock PDF first, then repair.
  • Couldn't be recovered - too little is left: the pages themselves are missing.

Under What we found the rail names what was wrong with the selected file in plain words - a file that stops in the middle, a pointer at the end that leads to the wrong place, the pages whose content went with the missing part (they stay in their place, blank, so the page count is right), the fonts whose text can't be shown any more.

What was in a lost part can't come back - no tool can restore data that isn't in the file. The rest of the file is kept as it was.

Save

Press Save repaired PDF. Only the repaired and rebuilt files are saved, with "_repaired" in their name - several together as a ZIP.

Limits

Without an account, and with a free one, you can repair two files in a run, each up to 15 MB. With Pro there is no limit on the number or the size.
