How to see what is inside a PDF: a step-by-step guide

Why is this PDF 40 MB? Does it carry anyone's name? Is the text searchable, or is it a scan? Inspect PDF reads a file and lays out what it is made of - pages, sizes, images, fonts, form fields, comments, hidden data, the health of its structure - and points at the tool that would help. It makes no file and costs nothing from the daily limit. It all happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Stručne
- Drop your PDFs on the page, or press Add files.
- Read the report in the middle, section by section.

Add the files
Drop the PDFs anywhere on the page, or press Add files. Each file is read as it arrives; the report of the selected file appears in the middle, and the rail lists what to do next.
What the report shows
- Overview - pages, file size, PDF version, page sizes, and flags: encrypted, Fast Web View, tagged (accessible), PDF/A, form, digitally signed.
- Properties - title, author, application, producer, dates.
- What makes the size - the bytes by kind: images, fonts, page content, attachments, video, metadata, structure.
- Images - how many, the largest, the resolution they are drawn at, how many are over 300 dpi.
- Fonts - how many, embedded or not, subsets.
- Text and annotations - whether the pages carry searchable text, and the form fields, signature fields, comments and links.
- Hidden data and structure - metadata, attachments, media, scripts, comments, thumbnails, and whether the file's structure is sound.
Next step
The rail turns the findings into recommendations, each a link to the tool that deals with it - images drawn at a needlessly high resolution point at Compress PDF, hidden data at Sanitize PDF, pages without text at OCR - make a PDF searchable, structural errors at Repair PDF. A digitally signed file gets a note instead of recommendations: any tool that changes the file breaks the signature. Check it with Verify PDF Signature.
