How to compare two PDF versions: a step-by-step guide

A contract that came back "with a few small changes", a price list in its new edition, two drafts of a report: Compare PDFs puts two versions side by side and marks every word that was removed, added or replaced - and, if you like, every area that looks different. The changes are listed page by page, so even a long document is quick to go through. It all happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

  1. Drop the two versions on the page - the original first, the changed one second.
  2. Choose Text, or Text + look to catch pictures and layout too.
  3. Press Compare.
  4. Go through the changes beside the pages; the report PDF is saved to your device.

Add the two versions

Drop the two PDFs anywhere on the page, or press Add files. The first in the list is the Original, the second the Changed one; drag them, or press Swap the two, to turn them round. A third file is not added - two versions are compared at a time.

  • Text - the words compared page by page; the choice for documents with a text layer.
  • Text + look - the pages are compared as pictures as well: a moved logo, a redrawn chart, a scan without text.

Go through the changes

Press Compare. The two versions open side by side, scrolling together, with the changes marked on the pages: removed words red on the original, added words green on the changed one, a replacement amber on both. The arrows over the pages jump to the previous and next changed page.

The rail lists the changes under their page, each as "old → new". The chips at the top count them by kind - replaced, added, removed - and switch a kind on or off; the search box finds a change by its words. A click on a row puts its page in view with the change ringed.

The report

The run also saves a report PDF to your device: a summary, then every changed page with the words removed (struck through in red) and added (in green), and in Text + look mode the two pages side by side with the changed areas boxed. It is the copy to send with your reply, or to file with the contract.

Limits

Two versions at a time, each up to 15 MB without an account or with a free one; with Pro there is no size limit. Pages are compared in order - page 3 with page 3 - so pages added in the middle show as changes on every page after them.
