How to convert Word to PDF: a step-by-step guide

Word to PDF turns a .docx into a PDF - a letter to send, a CV for an application, a contract to sign. The document is laid out in your browser the moment you drop it in, so the PDF is on screen at once, page by page, before you save it. Nothing is uploaded, and you don't need Word installed.

Kort fortalt

  1. Drop your Word documents (.docx) on the page, or press Add files.
  2. Check the pages in the middle - they are the PDF as it will save.
  3. Read the rail: it says if a font was replaced or a picture left out.
  4. Press Save as PDF: the PDF is saved to your device straight away.

Add the documents

Drop the .docx files anywhere on the page, or press Add files - one or several. Each is converted as it arrives: the file list shows its page count, and the middle panel its pages, at the document's own page size.

The old .doc format (Word 97-2003) can't be read in the browser. Open it in Word or another word processor and save it as .docx first.

Check the pages

The magnifier in a page's corner opens it large. What you see is what will be saved: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, pictures, text boxes, footnotes, headers and footers with page numbers, and links that still work in the PDF. Comments are left out, as when printing.

Fonts and pictures

The PDF is set in fonts that travel with it. A font the document uses is replaced with a similar sans, serif or mono face, fitted to the original's width so the lines break where they did in Word. The rail lists what was replaced, under Fonts shown as.

Pictures in PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP or WebP go in as they are. A picture in a format the browser can't read (EMF, WMF, TIFF) is left out, and the rail says how many.

Save as PDF

Press Save as PDF. The line under the button says what comes out ("3 documents → 3 pages"). The PDF is saved to your device at once - several documents as a ZIP of PDFs; the button then says Saved and turns into Save, which saves them again. The tool has no options to set: the document's own layout decides.

Limits

Without an account, and with a free one, you can convert two documents in a run, each up to 15 MB. With Pro there is no limit on the number or the size.
